Nicole Kidman said Sunday the turmoil in her private life helped prepare her for a widely applauded role as suicidal British novelist Virginia Woolf.

Kidman's fairytale marriage to actor Tom Cruise had just collapsed, she suffered a subsequent miscarriage and was being plagued by a stalker when she started playing the despondent Woolf in "The Hours."

"This role came along when I needed to play her," Kidman, 35, said at a news conference after the film's international premiere got enthusiastic applause at the Berlin Film Festival.


"The Hours" has triumphed at U.S. box offices and become a top candidate for a rich harvest of Academy Awards next month.

"I was raw enough and open enough to play it," said Kidman, who won the Golden Globe award for best actress in a drama last month that made her a favorite for an Academy Award in March.

"It wasn't a therapy," the flame-haired Australian actress said. "But I think things come along at times in your life for a reason. Roles fall into your lap at certain times when it's meant to happen. I was lucky to have this role at this time."

Directed by Stephen Daldry, "The Hours" is a complex movie, with three stories unfolding simultaneously in three time periods, featuring Kidman, Julianne Moore and Meryl Streep.

WAITING FOR PRINCE CHARMING

The film was based on Michael Cunningham's novel, which blends the life of Woolf and the writing of her breakthrough "stream of consciousness" novel "Mrs. Dalloway" in 1925 with those of a reader on the brink of suicide in California in 1949 -- and with a modern-day Mrs. Dalloway, performing decades later the same tasks as the novel's heroine in New York City.

Three stories describe the struggles of three women -- all within a single day. The film begins with Woolf's suicide in 1941 and weaves the tale of her battle against depression and mental illness into the other stories.

The movie is one of 22 competing for the "Golden Bear" award at the Berlinale, Europe's first major film showcase of the year.

Kidman has called the abrupt end of her 10-year marriage and the problems that followed a hell. She said she had already agreed to do the film and could not get out of it, even though she had no interest at the time in getting in front of a camera.

"I pretty much isolated myself," Kidman said. "I lived in a cottage (during the filming), spent a lot of time alone, writing and reading ... I'm not sure where the lines cross. Art and life mesh somewhere. It affected me and continues to affect me."

Kidman said she did not meet Streep and Moore, who were also expected to receive Academy nominations, until after the film was finished, during a talk show.

Kidman said the film helped her work through the turbulence -- and added she hoped to fall in love again.

"I have no idea what the criteria is," she said, when asked by a German reporter what sort of man she was looking for.

"Everybody wants to be swept off their feet, whatever. One day we'll see my prince charming -- someone who makes me laugh."
